Coupon Clipping

Sometimes you want to share things but you don't want to create email traffic that clutters inboxes, right? Well, the beauty of blogs is that you can share without the email burden.

Today, I'd like to share a coupon for Road ID. I'm not necessarily promoting the product, although I think it is well worth the $20 investment to have your ID attached to your runnig shoe. But I am all for helping small businesses get their word out and about. Guess that's because I am now a small-business woman also. So anything to help another out.... And hey, if you save a buck with the coupon code, then that's cool too!

BTW-I didn't write this coupon text....they sent it to me to distribute! :)

16 days, 1 hour and 38 minutes...

Until I make my marathon debut! Yep, you read that right. March 21, I'll be at the starting line ready to take my first step to marathon stardom. OK, maybe it won't be all that glamorous. My 18 and 20 mile training runs weren't pretty. (thank goodness no one caught those Kodak moments! eek!)

So many have asked, what is my goal for this marathon? LOL... to finish it....upright...and smiling.

Pray for good running weather. March can be so unpredictable around the DC area!

Marathon Mama?

Do you think I'd look good wearing a marathon medal?

The thought of crossing the finish line after six hours of running seems a bit daunting, but for some strange completely unexplanable reason, I'm beginning to think I could actually do it. Funny, because I'm not really into training right now...or running (the cold rain this morning detoured me from runningat 5am). But maybe that's the reason I'm thinking of marathons. The fact I'm not training (and suffering from pain and lack of time) may be luring me into thinking like a crazy mad person.

I know I can run for almost three hours....I've done that before. So what's another 180 minutes?

Definately need to think more about this one! What do you think, mom?

Tug 'o War

It must be the darker morning hours or the cold that has set in. But I can't seem to drag my lazy butt out of bed to run in the mornings. That is so very obvious from my sparce blogging and my absent logged miles. I've allowed myself a 'break' this month, justifying that I needed to rest my body from all the mileage I've done over the past 10 months. I signed up for the National Half Marathon in March, and will begin my training for that race in November with a new Fleet Feet group. So I don't feel all that bad about not running.

Or at least I didn't until I realized my next race is this coming Sunday (yeah you read that correctly). It's a 10k race in Rockville and is the third leg of a series. Because I really want to do this race, I figured I better make it a habit of running this week. Lord knows I'm not going to WIN the race, but I would like to finish the sucker! So this week it's low miles at a long race pace. Should be perfect for four-legged furry friends, right Nala?

Last night, I set the alarm for 5:50 am. And at 5:50am, I promptly hit the snooze button. (What has happened to the days where my feet hit the floor with the 2nd beep of the alarm?) I finally rolled out of bed and crawled to the bathroom around 6:10. Washed my face, combed my hair into a ponytail, and crabbed the first long sleeved shirt and pair of running tights I could find. I donned my gloves and my headband (to keep my ears warm). I did this all while Nala danced around my feet like a kid in a candy store. Obviously she knew we were going it hit the urban trail in a few moments.

And we did. When I started, I wasn't sure how far we'd go. It was cold but not too terribly bitter. In fact I probably could have done without the gloves and headband. Even after a year, I still struggle on what to wear on cold days. There is a point on my route where I must commit to either 3 miles or a 4/5 mile run. Even though I was on the side of the stree that should have taken me toward the lengthier option, I crossed over and ran to the shorter route.

About 1.5 miles in, Nala started to pull on the leash. She was sniffy around the cement sidewalk and looked like she was like she had to use the bathroom. So I stopped, and let her move the grass where she prompted....SAT DOWN. I was like WTF? Come on dog! What is up? So we started up again. And after another few minutes she started her sniff-fest once again.

This is so freakin' irritating. When she does this, she pulls the leash, which pulls my hand and stresses my arm muscles, which causese me to focus on the tugging, which gives me that one little reason why I shouldn't run. (It doesn't take much to distract me when I don't want to run.)

Well, we suffered throug the rest of the route --Nala being tugged by me every 15-20 steps and me being tugged by Nala for the rest of the time. I don't really know who won the tug 'o war, but I can tell you that I was really pissed off after three miles of that crap.

Tomorrow, Nala will be sitting her butt at home while I run solo!

You had me in stitches!

Ok, beginning runners! How many of you suffer through side stitches. For some reason, I seem to be getting them more and more often. I was sent this little tid bit in an email today, and thought I'd share it. I'll try it the next time my side cramps up and let you know if it worked.

BTW - Nala (my dog) had personal best today. She made it 4 whole miles without stopping and without ripping my arm off, even when we met another dog out running with a human! Yeah! Four miles is the furthest she's gone! :)

The Side Stitch

You're a mile away from the finish line, feeling great and determined to make this race your personal record, and then out of nowhere you get that sharp pain in your side. Everyone has been there. A side stitch, the bane of a runner's existence. A side stitch, or cramp, is technically called an 'exercise related transient abdominal pain' (ETAP) and usually occurs on the right side of the abdomen. The pain is believed to be caused by the stretching of the ligaments that extend from the diaphragm to the liver and other internal organs that are being pulled down from constant bouncing.

Runners who exhale when their right foot strikes the ground (approximately 30% of people), have a greater chance of getting a side stitch because of the greater force put on the liver, overstressing the ligament thus causing the diaphragm to have spasms. You can lessen your chance of getting a side stitch by hydrating, warming-up, and stretching before a workout/race, but if this doesn't work here are some good ways to cure one:

- Push up on the right side of your stomach with your fingers. This lifts the liver, giving the ligament more support. [I know this works; I've done this!!!]

- Take full deep even breathes. Avoid shallow breathing, which stresses the diaphragm.

- For those runners who exhale when the right foot strikes, try exhaling when the left foot strikes.

- Stretch. While continuing to run, raise your right arm straight up and lean toward the left and hold for 30 seconds. [don't laugh if you see me doing this...ok?]

My little Boo-Boo!

Right now, I'm beaming with pride! My little boo-boo ran an entire mile today without stopping and without complaining!

Earlier this week, Maddy willingly agreed to run the the Darcars Halloween Young Run. I wasn't sure she'd want to do it, or if she did say yes, that she'd actually run it. Even though she is in Girls on the Run, Maddy's never been one who likes to run. She does it more to humor me than anything. I try not to be the pushy mom, but I really do believe that there are tons and tons of benefits from running. Not only are there healthwise benefits (which are obviously apparent) but there is also the sense of accomplishment and increased self-confidence. And Lord knows my little boo-boo could benefit from having another dose of self-confidence.

Ken, Maddy and I got up a bit earlier than usual for a Sunday, and headed down to the intersection of Rockville Pike and Gude Drive. I had originally signed Maddy up for the 1/2 mile race. I didn't want to make the experience a bad one, especially if it was really cold (and it was), and if she wasn't in the mood to run (which she wasn't). Her dad met us there and surprisingly, he had decided to run with her too. So there we were, lined up, ready for the 1/2 mile jog...when I decided to pull a fast one on Maddy. The race officials kept announcing that the kids could run any race they wanted, so long as they only did ONE race. So I moved forward and lined Maddy up for the one mile run instead of the 1/2 mile run.

Ok, I know it was risky...but I figured she doesn't know a 1/2 mile from a full mile, right?

The music played "I like to move it, move it..." and the FOUR of us (Maddy, her dad, me and Ken) starrted the race. Immediately Maddy began to run too fast. Knowing my race experiences of late, I held her back to (what we called in the Army) an airborne shuffle pace. She did very well for the first 1/2 mile and didn't utter one complaint. She got a bit excited as we rounded the turn (the race was an "out and back" course). Maddy knew that we were half done. Coming back was a bit tougher though. The "out" part was slightly down hill; so the "back" part was slightly uphill. Believe me, when you are tired, any hill is trouble!

But my Maddy kept going! It wasn't until she saw the finish line did she even initmate that her legs were tired. She kept rocking and rolling until she crossed the finish line....in a whoping 14:31! (I know, I know...slow, but I did say it was an airborne shuffle, didn't I?) But she finished, she was happy and she was smiling. And she didn't stop! I know when I was 9 years old there was no freakin' way I could have ran a mile without stopping.

Maddy has really come along way since she started her running career. She's completed two 5k races (with stops and starts along the way), and now has completed a full mile without stopping (or complaining). This is HUGE for her.

Next goal for Maddy...to see if she can run a race without having me beside her! Gotta cut those mom-ties at some point.

Yes, mom, I'm still here!

Wondering where I went? .... Me, too!

Seriously I've been overcome by life - work, family, commitments, etc. I did manage to hit my goal on the Army Ten Miler on Sunday, October 5. WHOO HOO! 1:44:23. Best part is I had a FUN race too! And got a finisher's coin. [yeah, that's me, waving at the camera during the ATM.]

So for a few days, I was on runner's high. I treated myself to a week of nothing by pure laziness (no running. but lots of eating).

Then I decided I'd take a month off from serious running and do cross training. I tried Yoga...or rather, it tried me! Good grief that is a difficult class! My shoulders are still sore (four days later) from that darn "downward dog" pose. By the end of the class, I was looking for the dog just to kick it! ... .Just kidding!

Being the true runner I am, I started running again (even though I'm supposed to be taking a break, but don't tell on me!) Nala (my dog) and I have become early morning running buddies. She protects me while I run, and I let her poop when ever she wants. Gross thing is I have to run with a poop bag if we don't time it just right...meaning near the trash cans. So far, Nala is doing pretty good on our 2 and 3 miles runs. I haven't taken her any farther yet. I think she'd like to go faster, but for that, she'll need a new master. Maybe Ken will take her running....no, probably not. I think he is on a hiatus from running outside. Since the temparture dropped below 80 degrees, it's indoor treadmills for him.

So what's my next goal? well, duh! A 2:15 half....you'd think I'd give up on that, but I can't. I already signed up for the National Half Marathon (March 21, 2009). Gotta keep setting those goals out there for myself. Besides it will keep my motivated through the cold weather when I really dont want to get up early to run. [When does that time change occur? It's really freaking dark out at 5:30am.]

Well, gotta run get the Icy Hot. I have a couple of sore shoulders that need some TLC before I head to bed!
